PNG is lossless, so size reduction comes from palette optimisation, metadata removal, and downscaling pixels when needed.
Flat screenshots and UI captures compress well because large areas share one colour.
- Exporting camera photos as PNG. A single photo can be 8 MB as PNG and 400 KB as JPG with no visible loss on web.
- Expecting 50 KB with a 4000 px wide screenshot. Resize to the portal's pixel box first.
- Flattening text logos unnecessarily. PNG is correct for sharp type; just resize to the display size.
Quality expectations for PNG
Sharp edges stay crisp longer than JPG at the same KB because PNG does not add photo artifacts. Photos inside PNG are the exception.
